Young Love Makes Me Sick

I understand that kids are into style and being cool at a much earlier age than they were when I was young, but I was floored at what happened with my almost nine year old yesterday.

Cameron walked in the front door after school and announced that he had invited two friends to his birthday party on Saturday and that they could both come.

I about shot through the roof, because this wasn't the first time that Cameron had invited kids to a party without me telling him that he could have a party. We only let our kids have parties every other birthday because they are just so stinking expensive, and honestly, it takes me two years to get over the trauma of a birthday party, so there you go.

I told Cam that he would have to call those two friends and tell them that he was not having a party. He was really good about it - didn't cry or scream or threaten to run away or even tell me that he hated me. He just picked up the phone and called Megan.

M-E-G-A-N. As in a girl.

And that wasn't a complete shocker, because he had two girls at his party last year when there were several kids in attendance. I was just surprised that he had invited only two people to his impromptu party and that a girl had made the cut.

So he told Megan that there was no party, they had the whole discussion about what to do with his present that she had already bought for him, (cringe), and then he said goodbye, waited a minute and began giggling like a maniac. The next words I heard from his mouth were, "No, you hang up first."

Oh, no he didn't!

And then the giggling again, followed by another, "No, you hang up first!"

He did.

Are we really going to do this already? You hang up, no you hang up? I have never even done that! (I don't think.) I couldn't decide if I was more amused or nauseous.

I am so glad that I didn't let him go ahead with this party thing because he had intended it to be an outing to a movie theater. I can't imagine what would have gone on in the dark. I bet he would've pulled the move where he'd yawn and end up with his arm around Megan.

This is all happening too fast.

  1. I hear ya on this. My nine year old already has a friend who is a girl...who is his "favorite". We'll be out on a walk and he will carve B's in the dirt with a stick. (her name starts with a B).
Not looking forward to it AT ALL!!

Still chuckling at the "meat in the Pockets" comment. You crack me up!

  5. Hi from SITS! I'm not a mom but let me tell you that your post took me back to HS days! I would roll my eyes when I'd see couples part right before a class & be like "I'll miss you....I'll miss you more" I always used to think "Dude, you'll see each other in 50 mins, CHILL!" Something tells me that when my kids get to be that age, I may be blunt like that too!

  6. Mandy - you are going to have so much fun with those girls!!

Bianca - I think blunt is best. Teenagers irritate me to no end these days, so if I'm not blunt with my own kids I probably won't be able to stand them!

  9. FUNNY!! But 9? Hey, I see you have two blogs. How do you keep it up?
As the mother of three grown sons (and a daughter) I can only forewarn you the worst is yet to come!! :-) Hang in there -- before you know it you'll be a grandmother (like me) and you'll be watching your kids stress over the romantic encounters of THEIR kids. Life does have it paybacks! Happy SITS Saturday Sharefest. Stop by my blog and visit me.
