All of Mount Vernon was splendid and so full of history that you could almost see the ghosts of Martha and dear ol' George wandering the mansion and grounds. It was breathtaking. The entire estate has been restored to perfection and it was a treat to see it all.
But imagine sitting on George Washington's porch. For me, it was one of those moments when you almost can't believe you're doing what you're doing. And the view? Spectacular.
There is a relatively new museum there on the estate which is possibly the most well done museum I have ever been in. There are things for all ages, a theater which snows on you and rumbles your seat with cannon fire, General Washington's innovative dentures, and mannequin type depictions of George Washington at different stages in his life. His clothing, dentures, death mask and other artifacts were scanned and researched to guarantee the most authentic representation of George's size and looks. It's amazing. Unfortunately, I lacked the presence of mind to take any pictures of it.
Below are miscellaneous photos I took of Mount Vernon, and you'll have to forgive their lopsidedness. Apparently I was having too much fun to make sure my camera was level.
The garden.
George Washington's tomb.
The old tomb and original resting place.
The General's carriage.
Heidi, Andrew, Kate and Jane.
Tomorrow's top ten moment? It's an odd one. You'll just have to check back to find out!
That is stunning. How wonderful to be in the middle of so much history.
