I grocery shop once every two weeks. I get two weeks worth of meals and snacks, and then I only have to go back when we run out of milk, bread, or fresh fruit. It works pretty well in the sense that it cuts down on food costs when you always know what your options for dinner are; no last minute trips to Dominos for us. Usually. Plus, anytime I step foot into a store, I can't help but buy at least one more thing that what was on my list, so the less often I go, the better.
There is one thing that this system doesn't work so well for. Snacking.
I find that snacking is truly a mood-based activity, and I can't plan ahead for what I'm going to want to eat while I watch Burn Notice with Andrew, or force myself to fold laundry. (Don't you eat snacks and watch movies while you fold laundry?)
This last Friday, while grocery shopping, I tried to anticipate my munching needs a little bit better so that I wouldn't find myself lacking the perfect treat, whatever it was.
I bought a gallon of ice cream, a pound of beef jerky, three large bags of MnM's, two boxes of Cheese Nips, one box of animal crackers, a bag of black licorice, Jolly Ranchers, Tootsie Rolls, cinnamon bears, microwave popcorn, Doritos, two enormous boxes of Poptarts, and a couple bags of baby carrots so I wouldn't look like a jack-ass in the check-out line.
Wouldn't ya know? All I want right now are some Jalepeno Poppers.
Snacks are what get me every time! You're right, you can't plan for it. (Just go ahead and throw away the carrots. No need to wait until they turn all nasty.) :)
ReplyDeleteWow! I'm impressed you can get what you need for two weeks! I need to do that. Haha...did you enjoy the carrots? Jalepeno Poppers..gotta give those a try...too funny!
ReplyDeleteWow! I'm duly impressed by your list of snackers! And now I'm envisioning animal crackers dipped in ice cream and topped with cinnamon bears...yum. Off to the kitchen!
ReplyDeleteOK, you've got a day's supply there--now what about the rest of the week! Think ahead, woman!
ReplyDeleteUm, I'm pretty sure the clerk had your number, even with the carrots!
ReplyDeleteBeef Jerky is one of my loves. In fact, Craig registered for it when we were getting married.
Hahahaha. Snacking will be the ultimate death of me. I'm almost positive. I have a problem.
ReplyDeleteSo true that we can have a pantry full of snacks and still be jonesing for something else!
ReplyDeleteMy kids would love to come over and snack at your place, BTW :)
Snacking is unpredictable! My choices are pretty limited since I haven't been to the grocery store yet.
ReplyDeleteThe thing is, I can buy tons of snacks, but my kids don't allow them to remain in my pantry over night.
I thought this one was so funny, I posted it to my 1500 closest friends on FB. You may be getting a few hits today! Enjoy!!!
ReplyDeleteYes, I'm sure the carrots were the perfect cover!!
ReplyDeleteMy perfect snack? Garden Herb Triscuits and Rondele cheese spread...I could live on it.
My husband constantly laments that we have "no" snack food in the house. But really, we just don't have what he's craving.
ReplyDeleteBut I always watch a movie while folding laundry. It's the only way to get through it.
Ooops, that happens here too. Snacks run out first, and then if feels like there's no food in the house! ;-)
ReplyDeleteI pretty much snack when I do anything.....and I always find myself short of snack food because I don't anticipate what my needs will be for an entire week. Right now I'm nice and stocked with chocolatey goodness but of course am craving something salty. I may just have to put some salt on my chocolate (don't judge me, I'm pregnant!)
ReplyDeleteI hope your kids were with you at the market or else the contents of your shopping cart might look like one who had just smoked an organic fatty. Awesome.

ReplyDeleteHaha! You crack me up! I do the same thing. Snacking is something I looooove. I shop for two weeks' worth of groceries as well and you're so right... You can't anticipate what your snack cravings will be at any given moment. Hence the jalepeno poppers craving. lol
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for stopping by my place. I'm really behind on visiting blogs as life has been crazy around these parts, but I appreciate your visit nonetheless. Have a great day!

@TweetingMama
You have good snacks at your house!
ReplyDeleteI am most impressed by the fact that you are able to shop for two weeks at a time. I need a class - please school me in better meal planning and shopping! My boys are 15 mo. and 4 yrs., and I know it won't be long before I need to start keeping a lot more food in the house. A lot.
Way to sneak in those carrots. Can I come over and share your black licorice? It's my fave!
ReplyDeleteAnd by the way .... I'm a two week shopper myself. You are right, the snack thing gets so messed up!
Jay-sus! My kids would love you! They complain I don't buy enough junk. They must nevah see this post. Nevah!
