The Truth About The Tooth Fairy

"Mom, don't forget I put my tooth under my pillow."

"Why would I need to know that?"

"You know, just in case the tooth fairy doesn't exist."

Well, it happened.  Cameron is beginning to figure things out.  I felt kinda sad about this exchange we had, but I've known this was coming, and was even a little worried that he was catching on too slowly.

I sent him off to bed for one more night of believing, and tomorrow, I'll have the unfortunate task of taking the magic out of every holiday he's ever lost sleep over.

Because I can't tell the truth about the tooth fairy and expect that Santa will remain unscathed.

But if he knows the truth about the Tooth Fairy, do I still have to fork out a dollar every time he loses a molar?

  1. Oh, poor Cameron - doesn't even know what he's about to learn. :(

I say, if you have to tell him about the Tooth Fairy, fine - but can you leave Santa and the Easter Bunny out of it for another year or two? ;-)

  2. Good luck! The hardest part be finding time alone w/him. Lucas lost his 1st tooth since knowing. Morgan asked, "Well aren't you going to put it under your pillow?"

  3. I told C-boy (the only child who has lost teeth so far!) the tooth fairy stops coming after he lost 4 teeth. I seriously use to go all out...fairy dust in the window sill..little footprints on a piece of paper with a note. C-boy loved it..to some degree I think he still believes in her...even though he "knows" she's not real.

  4. There is a great book called "Dad, Are you the Tooth Fairy?" It is an awesome book! You should find it and read it. Has awesome pictures and a really fun story about the tooth fairy.

  6. How old is Cameron again? 9? that means I've got 1 to 2 years left.

My kid believes, but he has started to question. I love the magic of it all.....the greatest frauds perpetrated upon our children are Tooth Fairy, Santa, Easter Bunny...I think it's so cool that most of the world is in on it.

  7. I remember being kind of bummed when I figured out the Santa thing. The only reason I kept believing in the first place was because they would broadcast on the NEWS where Santa was at in the world on Christmas Eve. If Santa was fake, they wouldn't bother talking about him on the news, right? Growing up blows. Sigh.

  8. Yes! He still deserves the cash!

  9. Still forked over the cash, even when the youngest one "figured it out". I guess she was smart enough to not totally question it (like yours) but to be open to the possibility. Still, I hated that those secret parent-type games started to unravel.

I think my kids still believe in the Great Turkey, though. He pecks their cheeks with red Sharpie pen the night before Thanksgiving.

  10. When I took Alex to dinner that dark December evening about 5 years ago, I broke it to him as well as I could - His reply, "Dad, it's okay if you don't believe in Santa - But I still do." They will be ready when they are ready...

  11. I probably already told you this, but Ben had already guessed, and hounded me about Santa for 2 Christmases in a row, so I finally broke down and told him. 5 minutes later he walked back in the room crying and said "Why did you tell me? I wanted to believe in the magic for one more year!" So good luck with all that.

  12. I believe in the tooth fairy, the easter bunny, Santa, and even Mickey Mouse. And if I didn't I wouldn't tell ANYONE! EVER! Wayne and I are taking any doubts to the grave, we've pinky sworn!

  13. I have to say I remember when I knew the Tooth Fairy wasn't real. I was 9, maybe 10. I guess somewhere in my mind I must have guessed it was my mom, but the morning she was up late with a Male Friend, and I still had a tooth under my pillow, I knew for sure. I don't remember it ever being discussed though....the next morning I awoke to have my usual 4 quarters in my tooth holder under my pillow....And as for Santa, I STILL believe in Santa!! It's the PERSON, it's the Magic of the Season. And that's what I try to instill in my Daughters. It has nothing to do with the TF, Santa, or The Easter Bunny, it has to do with Magic, Belief in the "What if", etc. And I knew if I ever blew the horn I knew Santa wasn't real, my Presents wouldn't be nearly as Cool!! LOL

  14. Hahaha! Good question. Maybe if he figures that's how it works he;ll fake it. Or at least keep it to himself. As soon as I discovered the tooth fairy wasn't real I had to share...with my little sister. I still feel pretty jerky about that.
