Last summer, a lovely lady wrote a blog post about one of her special places. It made me swoon, and I was instantly in love with this woman. In a kindred spirit kind of way. Today, I finally got to visit this special place of hers, and it instantly became one of mine, too.
I have a thing for cemeteries and prisons. I'm strange like that. But not just any cemetery. I like a cemetery with intrigue and character. One that whispers secrets in a strange tongue with each breeze that rushes by. One with an air that steals the cares of this world from your mind as you inhale the memory of people gone before. One that sounds like reverent life and emptiness at the same time.
I decided that if I could live in Park City, (preferably in this house, which happens to be for sale),
I would go to Glenwood every day to read. To think about spring flowers. To remember my grandmother. To be still and calm.
My cousin just sold a house in Park City and moved here...wonder if she ever visited??
ReplyDeleteThat's funny, I have a thing for cemeteries too! That one does look like it's got some character. There was one in upstate New York that my sister lived close to. REALLY old tombstones and a flock of crows or ravens (some kind of black bird) really added to the atmosphere!
ReplyDeleteI really love cemetaries and anything old and abandoned. out here in arizona if it's old and abandoned it gets torn down. so if i could, i'd really like to live somewhere they keep those structures up so i could visit them.
ReplyDeleteBethany, I love that you have a cemetary to save for special occasions. These are awesome pics, and there just IS something cool and mellow about a cemetary.
ReplyDeleteI have a thing for cemetaries, too. It's called "crap my pants fear"
ReplyDeleteNo idea why. I just can't handle them.
I run through Sacred Heart cemetary most days. Not because I'm intrigued, but because I don't want to become a resident prematurely by being hit by a car on that blind corner. I do find it peaceful. It's really small, but I always pick up any fallen flowers and find it quite peaceful. Not peaceful enough to read a book like you book! But to each each their own!
ReplyDeleteWhat cool pictures! This one really does look like it has a ton of character... and ghosts. ;) I love this about you. :)
ReplyDeleteOooh. I like this! Cemeteries, Prisons, all good. But let's not forget asylums and dilapidated cities. I think this is partially the wannabe photographer in me talking.
ReplyDeleteAlso? @Jennifer...go to Jerome. It's about an hour out of Phoenix and there are lots of old buildings, haunted hotel, etc. that are still there. It's an occupied ghost town....
It is kind of mysteriously beautiful but I'm a big old scaredy cat...I could not hang out there alone!
ReplyDeleteUm, cemeteries?!? OK, Bethany...I guess that's cool. :)
ReplyDeleteThere is a haunted prison in Philly. If you ever visit there, you MUST go to see it!
Great pix. We used to play cemetery tag in HS. It scared the crap out of me every time!!
ReplyDeleteI thought you were going to say, "... But for now I'll just have to lock myself in my closet."
Hmmmm...I hate dead bodies. I know, they're in the ground blah blah blah, but the thought of them laying there rotting away as I'm about to pound back a sub from Quiznos kind of turns my stomach.
ReplyDeleteBut it looks like it would be cool. Key word *looks.
I use to love "visiting" my grandparents when I was younger. Haven't been in years. There was just such a peace about that place. A quiet feeling of reconnecting.
ReplyDeleteOur nearest neighbor is a cemetery, up the hill, up the road. Gravestones dating clear back to the Civil War. I walk there sometimes. On one hand, I'm intrigued and awed. On the other, I wonder what is leaching into my water table/well.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I have the same "crap my pants fear" that Momma Kiss mentioned... but those pics are gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteBethany!!!!! You made it!!! Your photos gave me chills!! And not the
ReplyDelete"I'm so scared I'm going to pee my pants" kind -- the kind that tell you there's a kindred spirit out there. Some day we need to meet in San Fran and visit Alcatraz! I'm just dying to see it. (Well . . not really dying . . .cuz then I would have to go to Glendwood. :)
Seriously, those autumn photos are keepers. They made me cry.
P.S. I know exactly where that house is!!! Some day, I'm going to live in Park City. I. Am.
Why do we love cemeteries and prisons?
ReplyDeleteI dont' know.
My son and I love prison tours...
I like a good old cemetery too. This one looks really great!
ReplyDeleteOur first kiss was in a cemetary. Everyone thinks that it is creepy, but it was totally romantic and original. I think you would understand.
