My sister got 2 free tickets to a special early screening of The Help...which I believe officially opens this weekend...and she was kind enough to take me with her! Yey for sisters!
Of course, no movie is ever as good as the books, (though I think the Lord Of The Rings trilogy is rumored to be close?), but this movie was nicely put together. They condensed it down without cutting too much, and most of the feeling is still there. People who have read the book will likely not be disappointed.
Bryce Dallas Howard stole the show as Hilly Holbrook, (she's so evil!), but Octavia Spencer pulled off the perfect Minny Jackson, too. Such a good cast.
Overall, excellent show. Maybe not one for the men folk though. I know it would have been a bit slow for my husband's liking. (And I got him to watch Fried Green Tomatoes, so you know he can handle a lot of touchy-feely garbage.) Now that I think of it - when the movie was over a guy in front of me started clapping. I thought it was really odd. I don't particularly identify with End Of Movie Clappers, and that dude was either really in touch with his feminine side or he was joking.
How about you? Have you read the book? Are you planning on seeing the movie? Seen any other good flicks lately?
I read the book this summer and CAN'T WAIT to see the movie :)
ReplyDeleteTHANK YOU for putting a name to Hilly - I knew I'd seen her before!
ReplyDeleteI have yet to read the book - next on my list. So coming from someone who hasn't read it yet, I really loved this movie. Even more since it was free. :)
I am reading it right now!! I'm about 1/2 through & it is all I can think about. And free things rock!
ReplyDeleteSome how your photo is a little red X for me, must be a phot oof the book cover.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to see the movie.
Wonder how they get all the parts going!
You're so lucky to go for FREE!
I really want to see The Help!
ReplyDeleteAnd I'd like to read the book.
I think I need to read this book...and also possibly see the movie. I read a pretty good book recently by one of my fave authors, "Austenland" by Shannon Hale. Definitely not my favorite of hers, but still a good read. I found out recently they're making it into a movie, so I'll definitely go see that one.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the review. I was hesistant to go because I loved the book so much, and I just hate it when it gets destroyed with a Hollywood movie. I'll definitely go see it now.
