Last night we had grilled ham and cheese with tomato and sauteed onion for dinner. Yum, right?
Andrew came home from work and asked me if I wanted his help making dinner, and I replied that yes, I would, but I would do the cooking because his grilled cheese is always soggy.
I have a trophy on my mantle for being the most compassionate wife ever.
Andrew asked me if I was kidding - "There is no way you're better at grilled cheese than me," he said.
Even Ethan chimed in and said, "Dad's are better." He's such a traitor.
"Dad's sandwiches are always soggy and barely toasted!" I had to stand up for myself, because no one else would. "Mine are tons better!"
Andrew told me to have fun burning the sandwiches, he'd be outside playing soccer with Ethan, who giggled as he followed his dad outside.
Well, fine. Game on! I buttered the bread, sauteed those onions until they were perfectly caramelized, sliced the tomato and ham and slapped the bread in a hot pan. Butter was sizzling and I was a watchful chef, being oh-so-careful to grill with perfection so that I could show Andrew that I did not inherit my mother's "burn the grilled cheese every time" gene. When I had a couple of sandwiches just about done, I called everyone in from outside and wasted no time in showing off my superior grilled cheese.
Is it just me, or is that crisp, golden perfection?
I stuck my frying pan right under Andrew's nose and said, "There! See! I am soooooo much better at this than you!" And then I turned out six more perfectly toasted works of art and sat down with everyone else to eat my delicious dinner.
And realized I had forgotten to put the ham on them.
There went my win. Gone.

That's pretty much the story of me, summed up in a tale of grilled cheese.
ReplyDeleteI should learn never to compete with my boyfriend in anything, because regardless of whether I'm better at it or not, as soon as I say I am... I forget to put the ham in (metaphorically speaking).
Actually the one on the left looks a little too done - just saying!
ReplyDeleteNope, they are both perfect.
ReplyDelete:)
Maybe a lot of this depends on individual taste preference?
Ha, ha, ha! Thank you for being so honest, and sharing the story with us. You're a good woman, Bethany.
ReplyDeleteWell, at least they weren't burned. Mom would be proud. :)
ReplyDeleteSo I was wondering what to have for dinner tonight! Thanks for the easy tip. I bought some yummy sour dough bread from Costco and I also have some provolone & turkey.
ReplyDeleteMaybe I make some clam chowder as well???
Good for you, Bethany! Tip: I use mayo on the outside of the bread instead of butter, it doesn't seem to burn as easy and not as soggy.
ha..... love anything with cheese :) fun read!
ReplyDeletehilarious. we are huge grilled cheese fans around here too. and I think my husband also secretly thinks he's better at making them too. sometimes he hovers or nags while I'm in process, 'don't burn them!', 'maybe you should flip them..." etc.
ReplyDelete:) oh well. sometimes I get it just right and then it is real goooooood.

Perfect! I was about to say they sounded perfect, but I don't eat ham. ;) Still ... it SO figures.
